FAQs

Q. Is there any difference in the profile of coniferous and deciduous stumps?

A. As a rule, coniferous stumps do not regrow. Neither do they rot away quickly as they are rich in resins which act as a preservative.

Some deciduous stumps can sprout to form a completely new tree but deciduous stumps that do not regenerate will rot away faster than coniferous ones.

Q. Will regrowth occur after stump removal?

A. When the stump core is removed, some lateral roots remain in the ground. Some species of tree will happily regenerate from these laterals, e.g. willow and poplar. If this happens, a once off treatment with glycophosphate solves the problem.

Q. Can I use the chips and saw dust to reinstate the stump site?

A. Depends on what you wish to do next: if you don’t wish to resow anything you can backfill the hole with them and nature does the rest. If however you are replanting, you will need to add top soil to the chips beforehand.

Coniferous chips are best removed altogether before planting due to their resinous content.
